Burn Suspension for the Kenai Peninsula

Starting June 14, 2021 the Kenai Peninsula is under a burn permit suspension.  The burn suspension prohibits all burning requiring a permit, both large and small scale.  This includes the use of burn barrels and burning of brush piles.  The suspension is only in effect for the Kenai Peninsula.  It does not include Kodiak Island.

Open Burning Still NOT Allowed on the Kenai Peninsula

Open burning is still not allowed on the Kenai Peninsula.

Much of the State got weekend rain which reduced the wildfire danger.  But the Kenai Peninsula did not get that rain.  The Alaska Division of Forestry has kept the burin permit suspension in place for the Kenai Peninsula, while lifting the suspension in other areas of Alaska.

Under the permit suspension, the use of burn barrels, burning of brush piles and any other burning activities covered by a small- or large-scale burn permit on state, municipal and private lands is prohibited.

Div. of Forestry to Suspend Burn Permits Starting May 1 Due to COVID-19

In anticipation of the impacts of COVID-19 on Alaska’s wildland firefighting resources this summer and in an attempt to reduce human-caused fires and limit exposure to firefighters, the Alaska Division of Forestry (DOF) will suspend all burn permits – both small- and large-scale – starting on May 1.

Alaska’s wildland fire suppression agencies need the public’s help more than ever to keep firefighters and communities safe.

City of Homer All-Hazard Mitigation Plan

Attached here is the City of Homer All-Hazard Mitigation Plan.

Mitigation is the effort to reduce loss of life and property by lessening community and individual vulnerability to, as well as the economic and emotional costs of hazards before they occur.

The process of developing the plan brings community members and local and regional leaders together to understand risks from natural hazards and develop long-term strategies that will reduce the impacts of future events on people, property, and the environment.
