The Center Cannot Hold by Elyn Saks is a 368-page memoir of a life with severe mental illness, written by someone in a unique position to understand it. Saks is both a professor of Law and Psychiatry at the University of Southern California, and herself diagnosed with Chronic Paranoid Schizophrenia. As well as telling her story in intimate detail, she also uses the book to explore ethical issues to do with the treatment of mental health patients in society.
