RESOLUTION 10-46

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKA, APPROVING AND ACCEPTING A CERAMIC TILE SCULPTURE REPRESENTING THE WINNING POSTER OF MAGGIE LARUE FOR THE KENAI PENINSULA BOROUGH FIREWISE PROGRAM.

WHEREAS, The Alaska Division of Forestry and the Kenai Peninsula Borough sponsored a contest for youth on the Kenai Peninsula in grades kindergarten through fifth to design a poster for the FireWise Program; and

WHEREAS, The theme was “Fires in the Forest and Houses in the Forest: What Can We Do” and the winning poster was submitted by fifth grader Maggie Larue; and

WHEREAS, Art students at Kenai Peninsula College created a tile mural based on Maggie LaRue's award-winning FireWise poster; and

WHEREAS, The Public Arts Committee reviewed the request from the FireWise Program to donate the ceramic sculpture piece to the City of Homer and mount it to the front of the Fire Hall; and

WHEREAS, The Public Arts Committee recommended that the City Council approve and accept the donation and incorporate it into the Municipal Artwork Collection and perform regular maintenance of the sculpture with funds in the existing budget.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Homer City Council hereby approves and accepts a ceramic tile sculpture representing the winning poster of Maggie LaRue for the Kenai Peninsula FireWise Program and incorporates it into the City’s artwork collection.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the ceramic tile sculpture will be placed at the Fire Hall and regular maintenance of the sculpture will be done with funds in the existing budget.

PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Homer City Council this 24th day of May, 2010.
