RESOLUTION 16-025

 

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKA, EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR THE CONTINUATION OF WELDING COURSES AND THE VOCATIONAL-TECHNICAL PROGRAM AT HOMER HIGH SCHOOL.

 

WHEREAS, Alaska’s maritime sector employs a workforce of over 70,000 skilled workers, making the maritime sector the largest private sector employer in Alaska; and

 

WHEREAS, Homer’s harbor and associated maritime trade sector are critical components in a vibrant local and regional economy; and

 

WHEREAS, Many of the marine sector jobs require a high degree of technical and professional skill and pay family-sustaining wages; and

 

WHEREAS, Alaska maritime employers are contending with a 'graying' workforce, and seek to expand the number of Alaskans throughout the state who have the employability and technical skills, expertise and motivation to be competitive in the job market; and

 

WHEREAS, The City of Homer supports the Alaska Maritime Workforce Development Plan, an implementation strategy for industry, educators and governments to collectively keep this economic sector vibrant, to grow the number of Alaskans comprising this workforce and to ensure Alaskans are qualified to fill the skilled and well-paid Alaska maritime positons; and

 

WHEREAS, Strengthening the marine trades, including mariculture and shipping industries is prioritized in Homer’s Comprehensive Plan; and

 

WHEREAS, One of the Comprehensive Plan’s implementation strategies to strengthen the marine trades sector is to support adequate funding for Kenai Peninsula Borough School District operations in Homer, with an expansion of vocational-technical education; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Homer City Council hereby expresses its support for Homer High School Welding Courses and urges continued Kenai Peninsula Borough School District financial support for the vocational-technical program.

 

PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Homer City Council this 14th day of March, 2016.
