MEMORANDUM 03-125
DATE: July 8, 2003
TO: Mayor
Cushing and Homer City Council
THROUGH: Walt
Wrede, City Manager
FROM: Bill
Abbott, Port & Harbor Director
RE: Installation
of a Water Level Station on Pioneer Dock
At the June 25th Regular meeting of the
Port & Harbor Advisory Commission, the proposed installation of a water level
station (Tide Gauge) with meteorological and current sensing equipment on
Pioneer Dock was on the agenda. A
N.O.A.A. National Ocean Service Team headed by Captain Richard Permenter gave a
detailed presentation, which followed his team’s two day “fact finding” efforts
while visiting Homer Port and Harbor.
The attached
minutes of this June 25th meeting reflect on pages 1 through 8,
Captain Permenter’s presentation and the discussion by Commissioners with
inputs from the local maritime and scientific communities represented in the
audience.
It is believed that this project has strong
justification as outlined in the discussions and Captain Permenter’s
presentation. Federal and/or State
grant funding for this project has high potential and should be pursued.
Commission’s Recommendation:
That City Council strongly supports the project and
encourages efforts to secure funding for construction.
