MEMORANDUM 03-57

DATE:          April 8, 2003

TO:                Mayor Cushing / Homer City Council

FROM:          Walt Wrede

SUBJECT:    Traffic Light / Comprehensive Traffic Study

Rex Young, the DOT/PF planner for this area called yesterday. He stated that he had received the Council’s resolution requesting that DOT/PF conduct a comprehensive traffic study in Homer. He stated that he was working on it. He also said that current traffic statistics were sufficient to justify a traffic light at the corner of Lake and the Sterling Highway right now. He said that he had the funding and equipment to place a traffic light there in the next few weeks before the summer season began. He said he understood that the Council wanted to take a comprehensive look at traffic issues and suggested that we could put a traffic light at this corner now to take care of the immediate problem and then proceed with the study over the next year. It is possible that the traffic light could be removed if the community and DOT/PF ultimately decide that they want to do something else there, like a round-about.

Rex needs to know the City’s preference ASAP. If we want the traffic light, we need to let him know now so that they can install it prior to the summer traffic.

ACTION:  We recommend that the Council adopt a motion stating its preference regarding the placement of a traffic signal at the corner of Lake and the Sterling Highway this summer.
