SUBJ: PROCESS FOR CITY MANAGER EVALUATION IN JUNE AS DIRECTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL IN JANUARY.

January 31, 2003 the City Council adopted Resolution 03-18(A), to Offer the Office of City Manager to Walt E. Wrede and to Authorize the Mayor to Negotiate a Contract.

"There was a brief discussion regarding the draft contract information submitted by Personnel Officer Hobbs and Councilmember Stark. One of the items emphasized was that of doing an evaluation in June, 2003, sort of a probation period and then set a date to coincide with the contract anniversary"

Mayor Cushing asked me to tickle the evaluation for June.

Council needs to decide which meeting in June and what type of process they would like to utilize. If Council elects to use an Executive Session, please bear in mind that City Manager Wrede has the right to request the evaluation to be public: AS §44.62.310(C)(2), Subjects that tend to prejudice the reputation and character of any person, provided the person may request a public discussion.

Attached is City Manager Wrede's contract and the minutes excerpt from the Special Meeting of January 31, 2003.

RECOMMENDATION:

Conduct the City Manager's evaluation on June 23, 2003 via Executive Session, period.
