MEMORANDUM     04-37

TO:                 Walt Wrede, City Manager

THRU:            Carey Meyer, Public Works Director

FROM:           Tamara Hagerty, Parks Maintenance Coordinator

DATE:                        05 January 2004

SUBJECT:      Management of Noxious and Invasive Plants in Alaska

Please find attached a MOU for support and endorsement of an Alaska Committee for the Management of Noxious and Invasive Plants (CNIPM).  I find it very straightforward.  I also attached a list of agencies and people already in support.  I have other statistical data available about the increasing potential problems to this area and Alaska.  You may be aware of weeds in other states that have reached great proportion and taken over cropland as well as wildland.  I have attached a flyer for our greatest problems in the Homer area.  We have strong partners in our local Soil & Water Conservation District, as well as our Cooperative Extension Service, which is located in Kenai.  Michele Hebert, UAF Cooperative Extension office in Fairbanks, as been remarkable coordinating and keeping everyone up to date on lists and activities.   I also attached the most recent list of acreage in different areas in Alaska.  One of the current projects is developing “Voluntary Codes of Conduct for the Gardening Public” and “Voluntary Codes of Conduct for Nursery Professionals” to assist in eradicating invasive species.

It would be tremendous if Homer City Council could endorse this project.

RECOMMENDATION:

Homer City Council endorses the MOU for the Alaska Committee for the Management of Noxious and Invasive Plants (CNIPM) and authorizes the City Manager to sign and submit the MOU.
