Construction Funding and Authorization

Earlier this year, the City Council established a budget and authorized Public Works to proceed with design of the new animal shelter. The design is complete, and as promised we are back to present the final design. Attached is the final floor plan and building elevations. Below is the approved budget:

Construction Budget:

Shelter Building (3272 SF x $175/sf) $ 572,600

Dog Runs (900 SF x $95/SF) $ 85,500

Earthwork (2,500 CY x $9/CY) $ 22,500

Slope Erosion Control $ 20,000

Site Improvements (parking, water/sewer, drainage) $ 75,000

Electrical/Telephone service $ 30,000

Demolition of Existing Facility $ 0

Subtotal - Construction Budget $ 805,600

Design Budget:

Animal Shelter Building $ 64,000

Civil Site Improvements $ 12,000

Design Survey/Geotechnical Study $ 15,000

Construction Inspection $ 8,000

Subtotal - Design Budget $ 99,000

Subtotal $ 904,600

Contingency (5%) $ 45,000

TOTAL PROJECT BUDGET $ 949,600

The recent increase in the cost of steel, lumber and copper has put pressure on our budget. By eliminating some of the furnishings (some of the painting, lockers, sinks, cabinets, etc.) and some exterior work (seeding, landscaping, gutters/downspouts); the project is within the approved budget. The eliminated items can and will be accomplished by animal shelter volunteers.

Recommendation: The Council identify a funding mechanism to augment available funds and authorize the City Manager to execute all documents necessary to bid and construct the facility.
