FROM:             PARKS & RECREATION ADVISORY COMMISSION

DATE:              OCTOBER 27, 2005

SUBJECT:       BUDGET PRIORITIES

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission discussed the 2006 Budget at their regular meeting on October 20, 2005.  Rich Kleinleder, organizing member of the Jack Gist Park, appeared before the Commission and gave an overview of the improvements needed to ready the ballfields at the park.  In 2005 the Softball Association and members of the community volunteered to rake and seed the fields at the park.  There is more work to be done on the fields to utilize them in 2007 and the need to create a parking area.  Mr. Kleinleder explained the Jack Gist Recreational Park Association plans to apply for grant funds to aid in acquiring restrooms, concession stands and fences.

Upon discussion, the Commission determined there is a need to create a parking lot in the Jack Gist Park in 2006.  The Parks and Recreation Commission recommends that the City Council budget sufficient funds for creating the parking area at the Jack Gist Park.  It is a crucial step to further development of the park to ready it for softball, equestrian and soccer recreational activities.  Financial support from the community makes it possible for the user groups to garner additional funding.

The Commission recommends more funding for city-wide parks and trail improvements, benches, playground equipment and signage.  An additional $1,000 is requested for Community Park Day, an annual event, to be held in the spring.
