SUBJ: SAFETY CONCERNS AT THE BASE OF THE HOMER SPIT AND MARINER PARK

Background

The Port and Harbor Advisory Commission discussed concerns relating to bicycle and pedestrian safety at the base of the Spit and at Mariner Park under New Business, Item B, 2007 Capital Improvement Plan.

Specific concerns included:

· no safe connection between Beluga Slough/Ocean Drive bike path and the Homer Spit bike path.

· no safe access from Mariner Park to Homer Spit bike path

· inadequate parking at the base of Homer Spit bike path exacerbates safety issues.

· lack of restrooms along the Homer Spit bike path increases the number of pedestrians and bicycles crossing between Mariner Park and Homer Spit bike path.

The consensus of the Commission was that future bike path capital improvements should be designed to alleviate these safety concerns.

Recommendation

Advisory in nature, no action required.
