SUBJ:             MARINER PARK

           

            Background  

            The Port and Harbor Advisory Commission discussed the proposed fishing lagoon at          Mariner Park at its September 27, 2006 regular meeting as Item A under New Business.       The Commission was provided a copy of Mariner Park Issues Paper and the Mariner             Park Master Plan and Map.  There was one person who testified under public            comments.

 

            The following concerns were expressed about the impacts of a fishing lagoon at Mariner     Park:

·                    degradation of existing habitat

·                    displacement of existing year round recreational use

·                    costs associated with construction, maintenance and stocking

·                    airport safety

·                    increased congestion at that location

·                    no safe access to the Homer Spit Bike Trail

·                    dredging costs

 

            The Commission passed the following motion:

           

            ULMER/VELSKO WE RECOMMEND NOT BUILDING A SECOND FISHING LAGOON             AT MARINER PARK.

 

            There was no further discussion on the motion.

 

            VOTE:  YES:  VELSKO, CARROLL, MACKIE, MARTIN, KILCHER, ULMER

 

            Motion carried.

 

            Recommendation

            Advisory in nature, no action required.
