M E M O R A N D U M 06-21
TO: MAYOR HORNADAY AND HOMER CITY COUNCIL
FROM: COUNCILMAN DOUG STARK
DATE: COUNCIL MEETING OF 13 FEBRUARY 2006
SUBJECT: JUNEAU TRIP REPORT - 24-26 JANUARY 2006
After an exciting trip from Homer to Anchorage, we arrived in Juneau on
the 25th. The Alaska Municipal League Board saw fit to award Homer, from
among 5 candidates, the summer AML Legislative Meeting on a vote of 13-1.
We of course did some lobbying, and the Clerk's Office, with some help
from the Chamber of Commerce, prepared an outstanding invitation brochure
which clinched the bid.
The conference will be held August 10-13, and we've been asked by AML to
host an opening reception, as I predicted in my Memo No. 06-08 on January
9th. The cost is estimated at $1500, which is less than the cost for the
city to send its delegation to another city.
While in Juneau we saw a number of legislators and met with the Governor
and the Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Val and Matt
both accompanied us to some meetings and also met separately with
legislators. We all had dinner together Wednesday night with Gary Stevens
at Paul Seaton's home. Having lived in Juneau three years and made a
number of lobbying trips since then, we thought that this was one of the
more successful trips.
RECOMMENDATION: Approve hosting reception.
fiscal note: estimated $1500
