SUBJ: PARKING AND PEDESTRIAN CROSSING AT THE BASE OF THE SPIT

BACKGROUND:

The Port and Harbor Advisory Commission discussed issues related to pedestrian safety and parking at the base of the Spit.

The Commission identified four areas of concerns:

● DOT installed pedestrian warning sign just south of Mariner Park has been removed

● The parking lot at the north end of Homer Spit trail is inadequate and could be expanded to the east

● There is a need for a pedestrian underpass at Mariner Park to connect the beach parking and recreational area to Homer Spit trail

● A safe connection between the Homer Spit trail bike path and the Beluga Slough/Ocean Drive bike path needs to be pursued

Recommendation:

No action required, advisory in nature.
