M E M O R A N D U M 07-53
TO: MAYOR
HORNADAY AND HOMER CITY
COUNCIL
FROM: COUNCILMAN
DOUG STARK
DATE: COUNCIL
MEETING OF 27
MARCH 2007
SUBJECT:
PARKING LOT AT SOUTHEAST CORNER OF KACHEMAK
WAY AND HOMER
SPIT ROAD
The Council has periodically discussed the need for
more parking near the intersection of Homer
Spit Road and Kachemak
Drive for users of the Homer Spit
Trail. The northeast quadrant is
currently used and will be expanded, but space is limited; it also requires
users to cross Kachemak Drive. The area to the west of the Spit
Road is a possibility, but the need
to cross the Spit Road
rules that out in the absence of a traffic signal or an overpass.
There is plenty of room at the southeast quadrant,
but it is at the tip of Mud Bay. 12" x 12" uprights backing 4"
x 12" boards holding dredge spoils would provide in excess of 20 parking
spaces. Permits would be necessary from
DOT (Kachemak Drive is a
state road) and the Corps of Engineers.
RECOMMENDATION: Authorize the City Engineer through
the City Manager to complete a preliminary design and apply to DOT and the
Corps for permits.
Fiscal Note: $125,000
