Subject: Expansion of Parking – Spit Trail

Base of Spit

In response to the Council’s interest in expanding parking at the base of the Spit to provide additional parking spaces for users of the Spit trail, Public Works has developed a preliminary construction plan (see attached). The project would extend paved parking along the north side of Kachemak Drive, adding approximately 22 spaces. The new spaces would be separated from Kachemak Drive by a guardrail and a second driveway off Kachemak Drive would be constructed.

Public Works estimates the cost of the work to be $106,000. Kachemak Drive is ADOT right-of-way and a permit has been applied for. Airport maintenance personnel have reviewed the plan and support the project as shown on the attached plan.

This project, once funding has been approved could be bid and constructed this summer.

Recommendation: City Council pass an ordinance establishing funding for the project and authorizing the City Manager to execute all appropriate document required to support the final design and construction of this improvement.
