RE: DEEP
WATER DOCK BUOY REPAIR OUT OF PORT RESERVES FUND
Background
The Deep Water Dock was
built in 1990 and has three breasting dolphins and two mooring buoys they are
used to secure large vessels to the dock. The buoys are located beyond the
dolphins one to the north and one to the south and facilitate vessels up to
800’. In early February, 2009 the south mooring buoy
became detached from its anchoring system and drifted into the mouth of the
harbor. Staff arranged to have it lifted
to the rim of the harbor for inspection.
Staff priced out the replacement cost at $24,000 versus repairing and
returning the old buoy to service at $6,000 to $10,000 and recommends the latter. Staff recommends the funds be taken from Port
Reserves.
Recommendation
Please review and recommend Port Reserve
funds be used to repair and return to service the south mooring buoy on the
Deep Water Dock.
