ORDINANCE 08-42

AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKA, APPROPRIATING $70,000 FROM THE POLICE DEPARTMENT FLEET RESERVES FOR THE PURCHASE AND OUTFITTING OF THREE NEW PATROL CARS.

WHEREAS, The Homer Police Department has a 1997 and two 1998 Ford Crown Victoria patrol vehicles that all have over 150,000 miles on them, are in poor shape, and are scheduled for replacement; and

WHEREAS, The Police Department has been looking for new vehicles that will increase fuel economy since the Crown Vics get less than 10 miles per gallon; and

WHEREAS, The Department has an opportunity to join with the Anchorage Police Department in a bulk purchase of 2008 model year Chevy Impalas equipped for police work; and

WHEREAS, This opportunity is attractive because 1) Impalas have a very good track record with police departments, 2) the price is right ($16,500 per vehicle), 3) The price will increase by $2,000 for next year’s model, 4) Impala’s are front wheel drive which increases performance in winter and reduces the need for SUVs, and 5) Impalas are six cylinder engines which get over 20 miles per gallon in the City, thus doubling fuel economy and saving the City upwards of 2,000 gallons of fuel per year; and

WHEREAS, There is presently $76,000 in the Department Fleet Reserves which is more than enough to purchase and equip the vehicles.

NOW, THERFORE, THE CITY OF HOMER ORDAINS:

Section 1: The Homer City Council finds that appropriating an amount not to exceed $70,000 from the Police Fleet Reserves for the purchase and equipping of three Chevy Impala patrol cars is the City’s best interest and hereby appropriates the money as follows:

Section 2: This is a budget amendment ordinance, is temporary in nature, and shall not be codified.
