PENDING BUSINESS

1.       Refurbishment of Art Wall

During work session with Artist Tom Reed, the original artist, he explained the history of the mural painted on the wall on Pioneer Ave. He was asked to paint it in 1986 as part of the Pioneer Avenue road construction project. The mural honors the contributions of the performing artists whose work performed remains only in our memory.  Mr. Reed felt strongly that the performing arts were central to what makes Homer special and unique. It was decided that the mural should be called something like “Tribute to the Performing Arts”.  Tom will work on the language for that as well as a plaque to be included on the wall.

It was discussed and decided to enter into an agreement with Tom Reed to maintain and refurbish the mural on Pioneer Ave. in the amount of $1,000 plus the cost of materials.  Materials costs were discussed from $500 - $750.

He has agreed to refurbish and update the wall by adding additional characters in gray tones. The following items were unanimously approved:

a.       The background wall color remain the same

b.       The characters shall be in three categories, Music, Dance & Theater

c.       The public’s input is requested.

d.       A press release will go out explaining the history and what Tom will be doing. It will ask for suggestions of current performing artists to be included.

e.       The clerk’s office agreed to let that be the question of the week.  Requests can also be emailed to dcorbin@ci.homer.ak.us.

f.         Public Works will be contact about repairing the existing cracks in the wall.

2.       Inventory of buildings for Public Art – all complete except Port & Harbor

3.       Website – tabled until next meeting

4.       New members – Debbie Poore is no able to be a member, she will help with projects if needed.  Gaye is taking an application to the Pratt Museum.

5.       Baycrest sign – Gaye talked to the Chamber and they have asked this committee to make a proposal to make changes to Baycrest hill signage.  Gaye will talk to Dotti to see if the emblems are moved if they can be incorporated on the Chamber building.  She will also ask if planning has any funds to help pay for the cost of the move since it is to help clean up the signage mess.

6.       Terms, Staggering dates - The terms as they are now are: Dave, Angie, Michael, & Gaye expire 4/1/2009; Trina, Hope & Karin expire 4/31/09. It was suggested to change to October 1.  Termination dates could be based on the dates the committee members were put on the committee.  Termination dates 10/1/08 - 2 people Dave & Angie; 10/1/09 – 3 people Gaye, Trina, & Hope; 10/1/10 - 2 people (the new replacement for Michael) and Karin.  Further discussion will be at next meeting.

7.       Comments were made about the Library “Community Art Partner’s Exhibit” and the question raised was as to why the PAC was not involved.  It was explained that it was a sub committee from the 1% for the art committee of the Library and they are completing their task. It is nothing new and the PAC is not being passed over on this.
