Meeting Synopsis

 


Session 08-01 a meeting of the Public Arts Committee was called to order by Chair Newby at 11:15 am on January 10, 2008 in the City Hall Cowles Council Chambers located at 491 E. Pioneer Avenue, Homer Alaska.

Present: Chair Angie Newby, Co-Chair, Gaye Wolfe, Trina Fellows, Karin Marks, Hope Finklestein, Dave Anderson

Absent:  Mike Yourkowski

Staff: Dru Corbin

CALL TO ORDER – 11:15 am

APPROVAL OF AGENDA - Agenda approved with “Action Items C-1” added under New Business “C” (RFP review). 

 

APPROVAL OF MINUTES - Approval of November 19th minutes

STAFF & COUNCIL REPORT/COMMITTEE REPORTS/BOROUGH REPORTS  

PUBLIC HEARING – none

 

PENDING BUSINESS – none

NEW BUSINESS

a.                   Budget passed with $4,000 for Public Art Committee.  The committee was very excited to be recognized as an important organization and wanted to convey their gratitude to the City Council and Mayor.  Dru will draft a letter of appreciation.  In order to expend funds, the process is to present a check request to finance.  Dru will complete check requests as directed.

b.                  Funding for advertising for Town Center Art Selection Committee was discussed and motion made to authorize up to $150. This would cover print advertising for the RFP and Artists Workshop coming January 24, 2008. Motion passed.  There was some discussion on where to advertise for the free ads and public service announcements.  Dave said to make sure to contact KBBI.

c.                   Draft Request for Proposal (RFP) was given and motion made to accept the draft with the following changes:

·        Page 1, second paragraph, first sentence - change times to read 5:30 pm–8:30 pm.

·        Page 2, under II. Scope of Services – second sentence of the last paragraph move to first paragraph after the first sentence.

·        Page 3 IV. Item 2, B, change third bullet to read “A minimum of 3 photos” instead of 5.

·        Page 3 bold last paragraph on item IV.

·        V. add sentence at beginning of paragraph to read: "Submitted proposals will be reviewed by the Arts Selection Committee and their recommendations will be passed on to the City Manager and City Council for approval."     

·        Motion passed

d.                  Parks and Rec Commission asked for a member of the Public Arts Committee to attend their meeting on 1/17/08 at 6:30pm. They want a formal presentation of what the PAC does and Hope Finklestein agreed to attend along with Angie Newby.  Angie invited any other PAC members to attend also.  Dru will notify Julie Engebretsen. 

e.                   Motion was made and carried to postpone the item on the agenda regarding the Wildlife Conservation Community Program.  Information has been provided and the members were asked to read over it ready for discussion at the regular meeting on 1/17/08.

COMMENTS OF THE AUDIENCE – Bob Brant mentioned that the Friends of Town Square has been organized to help in promotion of the Town Square project.  He suggested that the committee members promote the project to those around them.  He also mentioned that February 21st was the 35% presentation.
