RESOLUTION 02-09





A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKARECOGNIZING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF PAUL MORTON AND HIS VALUABLE ASSISTANCE ON DECEMBER 14, 2001 TO THE CITY OF HOMER POLICE DEPARTMENT.

WHEREAS, Paul Morton's unique background and qualifications have made him invaluable to the City of Homer's Police Department and employees; and

WHEREAS, Paul Morton has served the City as a Jail Officer, is currently serving as a journalist and counselor as well as operating the Domestic Violence Intervention Program in Homer; and

WHEREAS, On Friday, December 14, 2001 the Homer Police Department was faced with a serious and dangerous situation involving an armed man judged to be both suicidal and homicidal, who had assaulted his wife, fired his weapon, barricaded himself in his residence and who also had vowed to kill any law enforcement officers who attempted to remove him; and

WHEREAS, Paul Morton responded quickly to the Police Department's call for assistance, spent hours on the phone with the individual described in the previous recital clause, ultimately convincing this person to surrender; and

WHEREAS, Paul Morton's assistance in the December 14, 2001 incident almost undoubtedly is the major element that prevented injuries or loss of life from occurring.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of Homer, Alaska hereby recognizes the contributions of Paul Morton and his valuable assistance on December 14, 2001 to the City of Homer Police Department.

PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Homer City Council this 28th day of January, 2002.
