RESOLUTION 02-10

 

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKA SUPPORTING THE INITIATIVES AND PROPOSALS TO THE STATE OF ALASKA COASTAL IMPACT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM BY THE PRATT MUSEUM, CENTER FOR ALASKA COASTAL STUDIES, KACHEMAK BAY NATIONAL ESTUARINE RESEARCH RESERVE, AND THE ALASKA MARITIME WILDLIFE REFUGE, TO DEVELOP AND EXPAND COASTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS TO INCREASE AWARENESS AND KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ALASKA’S COASTAL ENVIRONMENTS.

 

Whereas, The City of Homer recognizes the high value of its beaches and surrounding marine and watershed environments and the need for their stewardship; and

 

Whereas, Homer and Kachemak Bay are premiere destinations for enjoyment, use, and learning about coastal environments by school groups from throughout Alaska and visitors from throughout the world; and

 

Whereas, Education is the means to increase appreciation, knowledge, and environmental stewardship; and

 

WHEREAS, The City of Homer is the home of organizations that provide outstanding coastal education and stewardship programs to thousands of people every year  - the Pratt Museum, the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies, the Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, and the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge; and

 

WHEREAS, The Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge are constructing a multi-million dollar Marine Center that will increase educational opportunities; and

 

WHEREAS, All four organizations are applying for State of Alaska Coastal Impact Assistance Programs funds to develop and expand their programs and to work together with Alaska teachers and school districts to develop a well-integrated system of coastal education.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of Homer supports the initiatives and proposals to the State of Alaska Coastal Impact Assistance Program by the Pratt Museum, Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies, Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, and Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, to develop and expand coastal education programs to increase awareness and knowledge about Alaska’s coastal environments.

 

            PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Homer City Council this 28th day of January, 2002.
