RESOLUTION OF THE HOMER CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HOMER NAMING AN UNNAMED PUBLIC WAY LOCATED WITHIN THE GLACIER VIEW SUBDIVISION NO. 1 SUPPLEMENTAL PLAT AS MORAWITZ ALLEY, IN HONOR OF JOE MORAWITZ.

 

            WHEREAS, Joe Morawitz had been a resident of Homer, Alaska since 1948; and

 

            WHEREAS, he served his country as a Marine for six years during World War II in the Pacific Theatre and was given the Silver Star for bravery “above and beyond”, and,

 

            WHEREAS, he was instrumental in bringing in the Longshore Union to Homer, and,

 

            WHEREAS, he greatly aided getting the first cold water sea life aquarium in the Pratt Museum which was the first in the State of Alaska; and

 

            WHEREAS, he maintained said alley for over fifty years, grading and graveling summers and plowing and sanding winters at his own expense, and

 

            WHEREAS, Joe Morawitz was just a man, who lived his life the best way he knew how, treating others as he would like to be treated, and

 

            WHEREAS, on December 4, 2002 a public hearing was held by the Homer Advisory Planning Commission to address all concerns about the proposed street name and all adjoining property owners were notified;

 

            NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Homer City Council recognizes the alley between Heath Street and Kachemak Way running east and west as Morawitz Alley and requests that portion within the City limits be so designated on the Kenai Peninsula Borough’s official street name map.

 

            PASSED AND ADOPTED BY THE HOMER CITY COUNCIL this 10th day of February, 2003.
