RESOLUTION 03-79
A RESOLUTION OF THE HOMER CITY COUNCIL AUTHORIZING THE RENAMING OF THE JUNIOR FIELD LOCATED AT KAREN HORNADAY HILLSIDE PARK AS THE MICHAEL L. DAUGHERTY BASEBALL FIELD.
WHEREAS, Michael L. Daugherty was a resident of Homer from 1972 to 2002 with an outstanding record of public and community service; and
WHEREAS, Michael L. Daugherty served as Homer’s Chief of Police from 1973 through his retirement in 1995 and also served as President of the Alaska Peace Officers Association; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure as Police Chief, Michael L. Daugherty acted as interim City Manager on numerous occasions to varied administrations, which role he fulfilled with distinction; and
WHEREAS, Michael L. Daugherty throughout his career remained a strong advocate for youth sports, including volunteering time as a Little League Manager from 1979 through 1982; and
WHEREAS, Michael L. Daugherty performed significant volunteer time coaching, fundraising and grant writing on behalf of Homer Little League, including the acquisition and installation of the existing metal fence backdrops on the Little League fields; and
WHEREAS, the family, friends and members of Homer Little League wish to recognize and honor these and Mike Daugherty’s many other contributions to the Homer community in perpetuity.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the baseball field at Karen Hornaday Hillside Park currently unnamed, but known only as the “Junior Field”, be named the MICHAEL L. DAUGHERTY BASEBALL FIELD; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate sign be created and installed at private expense honoring and memorializing this man and his legacy to the community of Homer, Alaska.
