RESOLUTION 04-49

 

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKA, SUPPORTING DESIGNATION OF THE STERLING HIGHWAY AS A STATE SCENIC BYWAY BETWEEN SKILAK LAKE ROAD AND ANCHOR POINT.

 

           WHEREAS, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities previously designated the Sterling Highway as a State Scenic Byway between the Wye and Skilak Lake Road, and between Anchor Point and Homer; and

         WHEREAS, the central portion of the Sterling Highway between Skilak Lake Road and Anchor Point also possesses qualities which make it worthy of Scenic Byway designation, including scenic, recreational, cultural, historical, and natural attributes; and

         WHEREAS, the City of Homer wishes to encourage travelers to drive the entire highway, enjoying attractions and activities along the way; and

         WHEREAS, Sterling Highway travelers contribute to the economic vitality of the communities along the highway, including Homer; and

         WHEREAS, the City of Homer has been involved as a partner in planning efforts aimed at achieving both State and National Scenic Byway designation for the entire Sterling Highway; and

         WHEREAS, this planning effort does not involve regulation or land use restrictions of any lands or assets along the Sterling Highway;

         NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Homer City Council hereby encourages the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities to designate the Sterling Highway between Skilak Lake Road and Anchor Point as a State Scenic Byway.

         PASSED AND ADOPTED BY THE HOMER CITY COUNCIL this 25th day of May, 2004.
