A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF
HOMER, ALASKA RECOGNIZING THE NEED FOR A CONVENTION CENTER FEASIBILITY STUDY
AND AUTHORIZING APPLICATION TO THE ALASKA DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC
(DEC) DEVELOPMENT FOR FUNDS TO CONDUCT SUCH A STUDY AND AUTHORIZING THE CITY
MANAGER TO EXECUTE AND SUBMIT THE APPROPRIATE DOCUMENTS.
WHEREAS, The Homer Overall Economic Development Plan (1999) recommends that the City of Homer “construct a conference center” and promote Homer as a convention/meeting center; and
WHEREAS, A Convention and Cultural Center has been identified as a priority in the City of Homer 2004-2009 Capital Improvement Plan; and
WHEREAS,
The Town Center Development Committee has recommended that the City of Homer
commission a feasibility study to help determine whether such a facility should
be built in Town Center; and
WHEREAS,
It is recognized that many of Homer’s assets as a tourist destination would
also be assets in attracting regional, state, and national conferences and
meetings; and
WHEREAS,
Such assets include a spectacular natural environment, a multitude of
activities to enjoy in the Homer area, and the presence of many respected arts,
science, environmental, educational, and cultural organizations and facilities;
and
WHEREAS,
There are currently no facilities in Homer capable of accommodating more than
180 people;
WHEREAS,
The ability to attract larger conferences and conventions could provide
significant year-round economic benefits to the community; and
WHEREAS, More information is needed to help the City of Homer and other community groups determine whether a conference center should be built and, if so, what features it should include; and
WHEREAS, Funding to conduct a feasibility study may be available through the Alaska Department of Community and Economic Development’s Mini-Grant Program;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Homer City Council hereby endorses and approves the plan to apply for funding for a conference center feasibility study from Alaska DCED and Authorizes the City Manager to Execute and Submit the Appropriate Documents; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council hereby commissions a study to be completed by June 30, 2005 if funding is obtained.
