HOMER, ALASKA

                                                                                               Police Chief, Manager

RESOLUTION 07-34

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKA, EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A K-9 UNIT AT THE ALASKA STATE TROOPER POST IN ANCHOR POINT.

WHEREAS, Local citizens concerned about drug abuse in the community requested last year that the City consider establishing a K-9 Unit within the Homer Police Department to assist with drug enforcement efforts; and

WHEREAS, The City Council expressed interest in the idea and asked the administration to review the request and provide information regarding the level of community support, the potential effectiveness of a K-9 program, and the implications for staffing levels and the budget; and

WHEREAS, The Homer Police Department has concluded that a K-9 Unit would be very beneficial but that for a variety of reasons, the most appropriate location for a K-9 Unit would be the Troopers Post in Anchor Point; and

WHEREAS, Local citizens from around the lower Kenai Peninsula have been working with the Alaska State Troopers to promote and encourage the establishment of a K-9 Unit at the post in Anchor Point and it is the City’s understanding that this might indeed be possible.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, That the Homer City Council hereby expresses it strong support for the establishment of a K-9 Unit at the Alaska State Troopers Post in Anchor Point.

PASSED AND APDOPTED by the Homer City Council this 26th day of February, 2007.
