RESOLUTION 07-41(A)

 

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKA, SUPPORTING ALASKA ADMINISTRATIVE CODE THAT PROHIBITS THE COLLECTION OF MARINE INVERTEBRATES FROM ALASKA BEACHES.

 

            WHEREAS, Kachemak Bay is a designated state Critical Habitat Area; and

 

            WHEREAS, Kachemak Bay is a National Estuarine Research Reserve; and

 

            WHEREAS, Its beaches are important as a living laboratory for marine education; and

 

            WHEREAS, Marine invertebrates are important to our fishing resources and for sustaining the marine ecosystem; and

 

            WHEREAS, Visitors to Homer beaches have been illegally removing marine invertebrates; and

 

            NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Homer City Council hereby requests that visitors, including school groups to the beaches around Homer and Kachemak Bay adhere to the Alaska Administrative Code 5AAC41.005--41.060 that prohibits the collection (without a scientific collection permit issued by the State) of marine invertebrates from the beach and the City of Homer will initiate the provision of educational materials to school groups and visitors that utilize our beaches.

 

            PASSED AND ADOPTED, by the Homer City Council this 12th day of March, 2007.
