RESOLUTION 07-68

 

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HOMER, ALASKA SUPPORTING PUBLIC EDUCATION AND OTHER EFFORTS TO DISCOURAGE THE TAKING OR REMOVAL OF NATIVE PLANTS AND INTERTIDAL AQUATIC MARINE PLANTS IN KACHEMAK BAY UNLESS THESE PLANTS HAVE A HARVEST THAT IS DESIGNATED BY STATE LAWS.

 

WHEREAS, The City of Homer recognizes the value of beach and intertidal aquatic marine plants as important to the ecosystem of Kachemak Bay; and

 

WHEREAS, The removal of such native plants both on the beaches and in the intertidal areas is detrimental to sea life survival and reproduction; and

 

WHEREAS, Native beach plants are necessary to help decrease erosion; and

 

WHEREAS, Kachemak Bay intertidal zones are a major nursery for marine life.

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of Homer, Alaska, is requesting the visitors to the tidal areas adhere to state regulations for the collection of marine aquatic plants and native beach plants for the purpose of education or consumptive uses.

 

PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of Homer, Alaska this 11th day of June, 2007.
