A RESOLUTION
OF THE
WHEREAS, The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Sport Fish Division, is continuing to struggle with more demand for stocked fish than money or the state hatchery space can provide; and
WHEREAS, Contributions from organizations, including the City of Homer, and individuals have purchased late-run silver salmon from Cook Inlet Aquaculture since 2003 to stock in the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon; and
WHEREAS, The current annual cost to purchase late-run silver salmon smelt from Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association is $25,000; and
WHEREAS, The Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon has been stocked by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Sport Fish Division since 1984 and salmon runs have come back throughout the summer season; and
WHEREAS, The number of angler-days of fishing that occurs at the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon has increased to an average of 25,000 where an average of 15,000 silvers are taken annually since 2002; and
WHEREAS, The
economic benefit from anglers at the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon to the City of
WHEREAS, The need for purchasing late-run silver salmon will end in 2011 with the construction of the new Fish and Game hatchery.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the City Council of Homer, Alaska requests that the Alaska Legislature purchase late-run silver salmon to stock the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon until purchase of fish is no longer necessary because the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Sport Fish Division is stocking these fish in the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon.
