RESOLUTION 08-13

 

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKA, EXPRESSING ITS OPPOSITION TO ADOPTION OF THE PROPOSED ALASKA MARINE HIGHWAY SYSTEM (AMHS) 2008 WINTER FERRY SCHEDULE FOR SOUTHWEST ALASKA.

 

            WHEREAS, The cities of Homer and Seldovia have strong economic and social ties and are dependent to a large degree upon AMHS to provide the transport of freight, services, and passengers between them; and

 

            WHEREAS, AMHS has for many years provided ferry service to Seldovia approximately eight times a month; and

 

            WHEREAS, AMHS proposes to reduce 2008 (FY 2009) winter ferry service to Seldovia to once a month as a cost cutting measure; and

 

            WHEREAS, The proposed schedule will have devastating economic impacts upon Seldovia; and

 

            WHEREAS, The AMHS provides a vital transportation link, no different than highways, and should not be operated as a for-profit venture.

 

            NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Homer City Council hereby expresses its strong opposition to the proposed AMHS 2008 Winter Ferry Schedule in Southwest Alaska.

 

            BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council strongly urges the Governor and the Alaska Department of Transportation to take social and economic impacts into consideration when making decisions regarding changes to the ferry service.

 

            BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution shall be forwarded to the Governor, the Commissioner of the Department of Transportation, Senator Gary Stevens, Representative Paul Seaton, and the members of the Senate and House Transportation Committees.

 

            PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Homer City Council this 28th day of January, 2008.
