RESOLUTION 08-28

 

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKA, REQUESTING THE ALASKA STATE LEGISLATURE TO PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR THE HOMER HOCKEY ASSOCIATION (HHA).

 

            WHEREAS, The Homer Hockey Association provides recreational activities for area youth and all age groups at an affordable price; and

 

            WHEREAS, Through HHA sponsored programs, the ice rink attracts over 5,000 visitors annually who use the facility for hockey, figure skating, broomball, open public skates, and specialty events such as the school hockey program, private parties, community teen skating; and

 

            WHEREAS, The ice rink and the programs which take place there provide a major economic benefit to the community in the winter months through increased business at hotels, B&Bs, retail outlets, grocery stores, and restaurants and the associated increase in sales tax revenue; and

 

            WHEREAS, HHA generates revenues through user fees, advertising, registrations, and donations which equals approximately 85% of its operating costs; and

 

            WHEREAS, HHA is in need of equipment improvements to include an overhead propane heating system to improve spectator comfort and a blade sharpener for the Zamboni ice resurfacing machine; and

 

            WHEREAS, These improvements will benefit spectators and allow more efficient operation of the rink.

 

            NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Homer City Council requests that the Alaska State Legislature provide support for the Homer Hockey Association.

 

            PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Homer City Council this 10th day of March, 2008.
