RESOLUTION 08-90(A)

 

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKA, SUPPORTING LEGISLATION INTRODUCED BY SENATOR LISA MURKOWSKI REGARDING TEMPORARY CREDIT AGAINST INCOME TAX FOR COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN TO OFFSET HIGH FUEL COSTS AND URGING PASSAGE OF THIS LEGISLATION PRIOR TO COMPLETION OF THIS 2ND SESSION OF THE 110TH CONGRESS.

 

            WHEREAS, High fuel prices are having a devastating impact on the commercial fishing industry; and

 

            WHEREAS, Diesel prices in Alaska have increased more than 50 percent over the last year, and some fishermen are reportedly spending up to 70 percent of their income on fuel; and

 

            WHEREAS, Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has introduced legislation to the 110th Congress of the United States to provide fishermen with a tax credit based on the difference between the price of fuel in 2004 and prices paid this year. The excessive fuel costs would be an additional deduction for eligible taxpayers.

 

            NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Homer, Alaska, supports the legislation introduced by Senator Lisa Murkowski regarding temporary credit against income tax for commercial fishermen to offset high fuel costs and urges passage of this legislation prior to the completion of this 2nd Session of the 110th Congress.

 

            BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Homer supports the inclusion of charter vessels in this legislation.
