RESOLUTION 09-07

 

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKA, EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR THE POLICY GUIDE “MONEY, ENERGY AND SUSTAINABILITY” AND AUTHORIZING CITY ADMINISTRATION TO IMPLEMENT THE GUIDE TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PRACTICABLE.           

 

         WHEREAS, Sustainability means establishing policies to protect, conserve, develop, and use resources in a manner that will sustain the economy and natural environment for future generations; and

         WHEREAS, Increasing energy efficiency and conservation provides a vast array of benefits, including reducing greenhouse gas pollution and financial expenditures for electricity and fuel; and

         WHEREAS, The City of Homer received grant funds from ICLEI—Local Governments for Sustainability to develop a policy guide for City employees that would help implement some of the recommendations in the City of Homer Climate Action Plan; and

         WHEREAS, Many local residents, businesses, and other organizations have also expressed a desire to reduce their use of fossil fuels and adopt other sustainability measures.

         NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Homer City Council supports the use of the policy guide “Money, Energy, and Sustainability” by the City workforce.

         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Manager is authorized to implement the policy guide to the maximum extent practicable.

         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the policy guide will be made available for other organizations and individuals to use in their own efforts to reduce energy use and support other principles of sustainability.         

         PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Homer City Council this 12th day of January, 2009.
