RESOLUTION 09-09(S)

 

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKA, ENCOURAGING THE KENAI PENINSULA BOROUGH TO INSTALL AND MAINTAIN RECYCLING CONTAINERS ON THE HOMER SPIT.

 

            WHEREAS, The Kenai Peninsula Borough is responsible for solid waste disposal for the entire Borough; and

 

            WHEREAS, An important cost saving measure has been the recycling component of the solid waste facilities; and

 

            WHEREAS, The Kenai Peninsula Borough has provided an exemplary recycling program and plans to continue the recycling program in the future; and

 

            WHEREAS, The City of Homer, in assistance to the Borough, provides public waste disposal services on the Homer Spit; and

 

            WHEREAS, The distal end of the Homer Spit is further than five miles from the nearest recycling site; and

 

            WHEREAS, The Homer Spit hosts numerous peninsula visitors during the summer months, many year-round residents from around Kachemak Bay and numerous commercial and industrial users; and

 

            WHEREAS, Minimal amounts of items are being recycled on the Homer Spit due to lack of recycling containers; and

 

            WHEREAS, The City Council has adopted the Climate Action Plan which includes a section encouraging recycling; and

 

            WHEREAS, The Kenai Peninsula Borough and the City of Homer have worked well together on waste disposal issues in the past.

 

            NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of Homer, Alaska, encourages the Kenai Peninsula Borough to add a recycling containers on the Homer Spit.
