RESOLUTION 09-37(A)

 

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKA, ENCOURAGING THE ELIMINATION OF PLASTIC BAGS IN THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT.

WHEREAS, The City of Homer has adopted the Climate Action Plan to reduce the carbon footprint of the city government; and 

WHEREAS, The City of Homer is known as a vibrant tourist destination; and

 

WHEREAS, The City of Homer is a significant fishing port in the North Pacific Ocean and many residents depend on the ocean for their livelihood; and 

 

WHEREAS, The City of Homer is the Headquarters for the Kachemak Bay Research Reserve and the Islands & Ocean Visitor Center which attracts many visitors to the area; and

 

WHEREAS, Plastic grocery type bags are a problem to the land and water environment and the reduction of, or the elimination of such bags in Homer would be advantageous to how the city is viewed; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the City Council of Homer, Alaska, encourages citizens and businesses to eliminate plastic bags from the environment. 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the City would place on its website a list of those stores that are plastic bag free; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the City would place on its website a list of non-profits that sell reusable bags; and 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the City would supply to those businesses that are plastic bag free an 8 x 11 sign that indicates such.

 

       PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Homer City Council this 13th day of April, 2009.
