WHEREAS, The Kenai Peninsula Economic Development District (EDD) and the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development recently completed a Needs Study to determine what types of jobs might be available in the future and what types of training might be needed for local residents to meet that demand; and

WHEREAS, The Needs Study identified several “hot jobs” and employment classifications that will be in demand, including construction and operation of the proposed gas line(s) and the types of training and certifications that will be needed for those jobs; and

WHEREAS, The Study recommends that creation of a new vocational education center on the Central Peninsula appears to have merit and that the idea should be explored further; and

WHEREAS, The next phase of the project is to conduct a feasibility study to determine things like facility size, private and public sector partners, location, construction and operating expenses, and interactions with other training facilities located elsewhere in the state; and

WHEREAS, The EDD has submitted a legislative funding request for the feasibility study and has asked local governments for support; and

WHEREAS, The City of Homer supports efforts to prepare the local workforce to fill the demand created by job opportunities that will be available now and in the future.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Homer City Council hereby expresses its support for the EDD’s legislative funding request to study the feasibility of establishing a Central Peninsula Vocational Education Center.
