A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKA, EXPRESSING ITS SUPPORT FOR AN APPLICATION TO BE SUBMITTED TO THE ALASKA COASTAL IMPACT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (CIAP) BY THE FRIENDS OF ALASKA NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGES TO ACQUIRE FIVE LOTS ADJACENT TO AND SURROUNDED BY PROPERTY ALREADY OWNED BY THE U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE.
WHEREAS, The Friends of Alaska National Wildlife Refuges wishes to acquire five lots located on E. Bunnell Ave. which are adjacent to and surrounded by land already owned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; and
WHEREAS, The land is adjacent to the Beluga Slough Trail and is important for wildlife habitat, protecting viewsheds, and enhancing the Islands and Ocean Visitor Center mission of wildlife education and interpretation; and
WHEREAS, The lots to be acquired would be very difficult to develop because they are high value wetlands, are within the flood plain (VE Zone), and do not have easy access to water and sewer distribution systems; and
WHEREAS, The Friends of Alaska Wildlife Refuges is currently working with a willing seller and has identified the CIAP as a potential source of funding for the land acquisition; and
WHEREAS, City support has been requested for the grant application.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Homer City Council hereby expresses its support for the CIAP Grant application to be submitted by the Friends of Alaska Wildlife Refuges to acquire five lots on E. Bunnell Ave. as depicted on the attached map (Attachment A).
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Homer City Council this 26th day of May, 2009.
