RESOLUTION 09-61(A)
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKA, AUTHORIZING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO PROCEED WITH THE BOILER REPLACEMENT PROJECT AT THE OLD MIDDLE SCHOOL.
WHEREAS, The City Council appropriated $35,000 in the FY 2008 Budget for boiler replacement at the Old Middle School; and
WHEREAS, During the engineering and design phase of this project, it was revealed that the boiler and connecting pipes contain asbestos and further, that the boiler can not be removed from the boiler room without cutting it into pieces; and
WHEREAS, The project cost estimate, based upon this new information, is now roughly estimated to be $64,000; and
WHEREAS, The Council has been discussing how much money and investment it wants to put into this building since it is in need of significant repairs and upgrades, there is no identified future City use for the building, the current rent paying tenant plans to be there no longer than three additional years, and the City is losing over $100,000 per year by keeping the building open; and
WHEREAS, The Council received a briefing from the Public Works Department and discussed the status of the current boiler at the Committee of the Whole meeting on June 8, 2009.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council finds that moving ahead with the boiler replacement project at the Old Middle School may be in the best interest of the City.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council authorizes the City Administration to proceed with Option 2 in Memorandum 09-85 for this project, including receiving and evaluating bid proposals, drafting resolution(s) awarding contracts, and preparing a budget amendment ordinance appropriating the addition funds.
