RESOLUTION 09-94

 

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKA, ACKNOWLEDGING THE HOKA HEY CHALLENGE, EXPRESSING SUPPORT, AND AUTHORIZING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO THE ORGANIZERS AS APPROPRIATE.

 

            WHEREAS, The organizers of the Hoka Hey Challenge are planning a 7,000 mile, cross country, Harley Davidson Motorcycle race across North America next summer; and

 

            WHEREAS, The race will begin in Key West, Florida on June 20, 2010 and end in Homer, Alaska on July 4th; and

 

            WHEREAS, The event will include up to 1,000 race participants and planners estimate that when support crews, production crews, friends and family members, and other visitors attracted to the event are included, there could be up to 5,000 people attending; and

 

            WHEREAS, Event planners envision a large celebration at the conclusion of the race and will award $500,000 in Alaska Gold to the winner and significant contributions to selected charities; and

 

            WHEREAS, The details regarding the celebration event, lodging, staging areas, etc. are still in the planning phase and both the Homer Chamber of Commerce and City staff have been helping to provide information about Homer to the organizers; and

 

            WHEREAS, Many of the race participants are expected to be Veterans; and

 

            WHEREAS, The event organizers and the production / film team have requested a letter of support for the event from the Homer City Council.

 

            NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Homer City Council hereby expresses its support for the Hoka Hey Challenge and authorizes the City Administration to assist organizers as appropriate by providing information that will help make the event a success and by developing and administering necessary permits associated with the event.

 

            PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Homer City Council this 24th day of August, 2009.
