RESOLUTION 10-33

 

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKA, EXPRESSING ITS SUPPORT FOR A KACHEMAK BAY RESEARCH RESERVE GRANT APPLICATION TO THE NATIONAL ESTUARINE RESEARCH RESERVE SYSTEM SCIENCE COLLABORATIVE TO FUND A STUDY OF COASTAL UPLIFT AND HABITAT CHANGES IN KACHEMAK BAY.

 

            WHEREAS, The Kachemak Bay Research Reserve (KBRR) submitted a Letter of Intent to apply for grant funding from the National Estuarine Research Reserve Science Collaborative for a proposal entitled “Assessing Coastal Uplift and Habitat Changes in a Glacially Influenced Estuary System Located in Kachemak Bay, Alaska”; and

 

            WHEREAS, Prior to submitting the Letter of Intent, KBRR consulted with potential collaborators and users of the resulting data including the City of Homer, the Kenai Peninsula Borough, and the Seldovia Village Tribe; and

 

            WHEREAS, KBRR recently received a positive response to its Letter of Intent and was encouraged to submit a final proposal which is due on May 4, 2010; and

 

            WHEREAS, The City of Homer has a strong interest in seeing this research funded because coastal uplift may have implications for predicted rises in sea levels, patterns of coastal erosion, infrastructure construction and protection, and a whole host of planning, zoning and public safety issues; and

 

            WHEREAS, If this proposal is funded, the City staff, including the Port and Harbor Director, the City Planner, and the Special Projects Coordinator, is committed to dedicating time and resources to collaborating with the research team in an effort to help make the project a success.

 

            NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Homer City Council hereby expresses its strong support for KBRR’s grant application to the National Estuarine Research Reserve System Science Collaborative to study coastal uplift in Kachemak Bay.

 

            PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Homer City Council this 12th day of April, 2010.
