A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HOMER, ALASKA COMMENDING EILEEN BECHTOL, HOMER PLANNING DIRECTOR, AND HUGH BEVAN, FORMER HOMER PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR FOR THEIR PROFESSIONALISM, TEAMWORK AND MERITORIOUS EFFORTS ON THE BELUGA SLOUGH PEDESTRIAN TRAIL.
WHEREAS, the Beluga Slough Pedestrian Trail improves access to a portion of the Homer Shoreline and helps to achieve the TRAAK, Trails & Recreational Access for Alaska, program goal to build and maintain Alaska's role as a world-class visitor destination; and
WHEREAS, there were many elements of the Beluga Slough Pedestrian Trail that required specialized attention to assure environmentally sound practices while utilizing traditional construction methods and a unique floating deck module; and
WHEREAS, the City's Planning Director, Eileen Bechtol, and Public Works Director, Hugh Bevan, worked closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Alaska Department of Natural Resources and the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities on the planning, design, construction and funding of the Beluga Slough Pedestrian Trail to create an attractive, innovative handicap-accessible trail through a sensitive wetlands area; and
WHEREAS, the Beluga Slough Pedestrian Trail has strengthened Homer's economy by allowing visitors a better opportunity to see and experience some of Alaska's natural wonders with several observation points and interpretive signs to facilitate learning about the surrounding habitat and wildlife; and
WHEREAS, Planning Director Bechtol and Public Works Director Bevan through professionalism, team work and meritorious effort and contributions made this project happen.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of Homer, Alaska hereby
commends Eileen Bechtol, Homer Planning Director and Hugh Bevan, former Homer Public Works Director for their professionalism, teamwork and meritorious efforts on the Beluga Slough Pedestrian Trail.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of Homer, Alaska this 12th day of July, 1999.
