Community Development
Long known as the "Halibut Fishing Capital of the World," Homer is also nicknamed "the end of the road," and more recently, "the cosmic hamlet by the sea." Homer was incorporated in 1964 as a first-class city and is located four hours south of Anchorage. The Homer Spit is one popular destination for visitors, who can choose from the exceptional shopping, fine dining, lively art scene, and outdoor adventure options available. Alaskans and folks from the "lower 48" alike enjoy being surrounded by the majesty of beautiful mountains, volcanoes, and Kachemak Bay's beaches and bustling harbor.
