On March 27, Governor Dunleavy issued Health Mandate 011, ordering all Alaskans to stay in their places of residence for at least the next two weeks and keep a six foot physical distance from others when out for essential shopping or recreating. On April 9, the mandate was extended until April 21.

Given the increasing concern for new cases of COVID-19 being transmitted via community spread within the state, this Social Distancing mandate, effective March 28 at 5 p.m. and continuing through April 21, is to prevent, slow, and otherwise disrupt the spread of COVID-19 in Alaska.

It is imperative that Alaskans heed these guidelines. It applies to everyone, whether they are currently showing COVID-19 symptoms or not.

Unlike citizens in more densely populated areas where “hunker down” orders have been issued, Alaskans can still enjoy the state’s many outdoor activities. Skiing, walking, fishing, and other forms of recreation may continue, as long as it is possible to maintain a distance of six feet from those who do not reside in the same household.

The mandate does not apply to people engaged in essential health care services, public government services, and essential business services. And it does not apply to grocery shopping, picking up medications, or other necessary errands. However, these trips should be kept to a minimum, should involve as few family members as possible, and should be conducted with physical distancing guidelines in mind. The CDC recommends that older adults and people with underlying health conditions avoid running errands entirely and rely on deliveries instead.

Additionally, all public and private gatherings that include non-household members are forbidden. And all non-essential businesses should cease operations, unless employees are able to work from home.

For additional information regarding the mandate, the state has issued an FAQ. The DHSS is providing daily updates and case counts. Information pertaining to the city is available here.
