CANCELED: Tsunami Warning System Test, Wednesday March 25 ~10:15 am
THIS TEST HAS BEEN CANCELED
On Wednesday, March 25 at approximately 10:15 AM, officials will conduct a test of the tsunami warning communications system in coastal areas of southern Alaska. Coastal communities on the Kenai Peninsula, Kodiak Island, the Aleutian Islands and the Pribilof Islands will participate in the test.
The emergency test message will be broadcast on NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards and on local television and radio stations. Some television messages will contain the word "TEST", but others will not as they are programed to scroll a standard emergency alert message. However, an audio message will state that the message is only a test. If your television volume is muted, or if the audio is unheard, viewers may not realize the message is only a test.
Warning sirens in some communities will be activated as well. If so, residents will hear an audio warning that is exactly like the real warning stating there is a tsunami approaching. At the end of the warning tone, residents will hear a message indicating this was just a test.
The test will NOT be sent to cellphones over the Wireless Emergency Alert system, although in an actual tsunami warning, this system would be used. If you are not yet signed up through KPB Alerts, we encourage you to visit http://alerts.kpb.us.
To avoid confusion with an actual alert, the test will be canceled if there is excessive seismic activity within 24 hours prior to the test.
Remember, on March 25th you can Chill because it’s just a Drill!
It’s not a real emergency.
Do not call 911.
Do not evacuate your home or business -- although it is a good time to practice your evacuation procedures!
