Controlled Burn on Homer Spit, April 8, 2026

Flames rise from a brush pile. A banner with the City of Homer logo and the text "Controlled Burn Advisory" are atop the image.

UPDATE April 9, 2026: The controlled burn may continue through Friday, April 10. Conditions were not conducive to safe burning on April 8, so the dates were shifted by a day.

A controlled burn is planned on the Homer Spit, from 5 AM to 5 PM  Wednesday, April 8, and the following day if needed. Public Works will be burning a brush pile near the large vessel haul out. They will have a fire hydrant ready if necessary. The crew will burn a manageable sized pile and have an equipment operator/attendant using an excavator to add brush when appropriate throughout the day. The pile will be hosed down to a simmer overnight and Harbor staff will be notified of the status.
