What Can I Do?

While many people are concerned about climate change, most do not know how they can help on an individual level.

Water

  • Properly dispose of hazardous waste, including but not limited to antifreeze, gas, oil, and paints.
  • Install water conservation devices.
  • Maintain and clean well heads and regularly check to ensure seal of well cap.
  • Dispose of pharmaceutical drugs at approved places, rather than dumping them down the drain.
  • Homer Soil and Water Conservation District provides resources for landowners to guide them in proper land usage. See link below for an article covering land usage.

Land

  • Clean up animal and pet waste.
  • Keep soil disturbance to a minimum
  • Avoid transport of invasive plant species
  • Properly dispose of refuse
  • Participated in CoastWalks hosted by the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies.

Boats and Harbors

  • Alaska Clean Harbors provides a detailed number of resources to help keep your boats, docks, and surrounding areas safe and environmentally healthy.

Energy

  • Solarize the Kenai is helping reduce the cost of going solar in the western Kenai Peninsula. They are a volunteer-led organization that work with community members to pool the solar buying power in communities.
  • Use non motorized means of travel whenever possible
  • Use a carbon footprint calculator to determine your individual footprint. The Nature Conservancy provides a calculator to determine this.

Political Action

  • Write a letter to your elected official urging them help Alaska transition from oil and gas production.
