RESOLUTION 16-036
A RESOLUTION OF THE HOMER CITY COUNCIL SUPPORTING A COMMUNITY GYMNASIUM IN THE TOWN CENTER AREA AND COMMITTING UP TO $650,000 AS A MATCHING GRANT TO FACILITATE THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FACILITY AS A COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITY PROJECT.
WHEREAS, A large number of community members support the City maintaining a community gymnasium; and
WHEREAS, The current gymnasium being used for this purpose is housed in a facility that would require a substantial investment in restoration to meet current accessibility and fire code regulations; and
WHEREAS, The Council has authorized the Public Safety Building Review Committee (PSBRC) to proceed with preparations for the construction of a new police station; and
WHEREAS, The site selected as most preferable for a Public Safety Campus is the land currently housing the community gymnasium; and
WHEREAS, Investing an amount smaller than that required to rehabilitate the current facility will allow for the construction of a gymnasium and the office space required for the Building Maintenance Department which is also located on the selected property; and
WHEREAS, Relocating the community gymnasium to the property made available for such a purpose in the area identified as Town Center will provide a small first step towards establishing a desired greenbelt in that area.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Homer City Council supports the review of options for such a project.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Homer City Council supports the commitment of up to $650,000 as a matching grant to facilitate the construction of the facility in a collaborative manner such as that used for the construction of the Karen Hornaday Park playground. Funds are to be made available in a two ($2) for one ($1) match in order to reach a goal of $975,000.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Homer City Council this 29th day of March, 2016.
