Duties & Responsibilities

It is hereby declared as a matter of public policy that support for artists and arts organizations, development and stewardship of public art, cultural tourism, arts education and cultural development are public necessities and essential for the continuing growth and development of Homer’s citizens, economy, and quality of life. The primary duty of the Public Arts Committee is to identify and actively encourage the development and sustainability of arts in the City by serving as the City’s primary
resource in matters of art, culture, public art and cultural tourism.

Inspection & Engineering

The Inspection/Engineering Division of Public Works is responsible for planning, permitting, design, and inspection of all road, water, sewer, drainage, harbor, and public building improvements; coordinates the placement of utilities, water/sewer service connections, driveways and other improvements within City rights-of-way (ROW). This division also provides review of all platting, zoning permits and subdivision development through the Planning Department.

Water and Sewer Maintenance

* Water: 48.65 miles of water distribution main lines, 332 fire hydrants, 567 main line gate valves and 22 water pressure reducing stations.

Motor Pool

The Motor Pool mechanics maintain 114 vehicles and light duty and heavy equipment pieces used by  Public Works, City Hall, the Police Department, Fire Department/EMS and Port and Harbor.</

Building Maintenance

Building Maintenance provides services to other City Departments regarding general building facility maintenance efforts including the Police Department, Fire Department, Library, City Hall,
