Did you know?
While popularly called Presidents Day, the official federal holiday is Washington's Birthday, which is celebrated annually on the 3rd Monday of February.
George Washington was born February 22, 1732 and served as the nation's first president from 1789-1797. One way to celebrate his birthday is to enjoy cherry pie to celebrate the myth that he received a hatchet for his 6th birthday and promptly chopped down one of his father's beloved cherry trees. When confronted by his angry father, young George confessed, "I cannot tell a lie, I did cut it with my hatchet." His father hugged him and declared his honesty was worth more than a thousand trees.
George Washington's birthday has been honored as an official federal holiday for 147 years, since 1879.
